Discovering the Self and building up Self-energy
The Internal Family Systems model is a transformative approach to healing and personal development, and at its core is the concept of the Self. This Self is our true essence, the core of who we are - compassionate, confident, curious, and calm. It is from this place of Self that we are able to effectively communicate with our inner parts and facilitate healing.
One aspect of the IFS model is the importance it places on the bodily experience of Self-energy. This isn't a vague concept but something you can actually feel within you, a vibrating energy that speaks volumes about your state of mind and being. When we are in Self-energy, we experience a sense of calm, groundedness, or even lightness. Our body feels centered, and there's a heightened awareness of the present moment.
So, how do you recognize when you are in Self-energy in your body? There are practices that can help guide you there. Breathwork, for example, is one of my favorite tools that allow me to tune in to the vibrations of our Self-energy fast.
Experiencing Self-energy can be different for everyone, and the sensations can vary from subtle to very noticeable. You may feel a sense of warmth, a release of tension, a tingling sensation, or simply a quieting of your mind.
Becoming more attuned to this energy and how it feels in your body will take time and practice. It's not about forcing an experience, but about gently inviting your Self-energy to become more present and guiding your inner parts with compassion and curiosity.
Next time you're doing breathwork, sitting in meditation, or practicing other consciousness-expanding modalities, I encourage you to tap into this space. Feel the energy coursing through your body, notice the sensations, the feelings. This is your Self. This is your center.
Cultivating this connection is a journey, not a destination, one that brings a deeper sense of peace, balance, and wholeness. It's a journey toward the Self-led revolution I've been talking about.
