Choice is a fundamental aspect of our existence, shaping the course of our lives in profound ways.
But what does choice truly mean?
How do we understand and reclaim the power of choice, especially when it feels lost amidst addictive behaviors or overwhelming circumstances?
What is Choice?
The word "choice" derives from the Old English word "cēosan," which means "to choose, taste, try." It signifies the act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. At its core, choice is about exercising our free will to determine our actions and reactions.
The Deeper Meaning of Choice
In the context of Self-leadership, choice transcends mere decision-making. It's about the conscious ability to navigate our lives from a place of inner alignment and authenticity.
Cece Sykes, a remarkable teacher and mentor in the realm of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, emphasizes that choice is a quality of Self-leadership. This perspective is transformative, especially when we consider how often we feel powerless or driven by external influences.

The Essence of Self and the Gift of Choice
In IFS, we talk about unblending from our parts - separating and recognizing our deeper essence, the unbreakable core of who we truly are, known as the Self. This Self is our inner healer and leader, the essence that remains untainted by life's challenges and traumas. Reconnecting with this Self brings us back to the realm of choice.
Choice and Addictive Behaviors
Addictive behaviors, whether they involve substances like alcohol and drugs or activities like excessive exercising or compulsive eating, often rob us of our sense of choice. We feel as though the substance or behavior controls us, and we are merely passengers along for the ride.
Cece Sykes' work on addiction highlights that deep inner work, particularly through the IFS model, can restore our sense of choice. By reconnecting with our Self, acknowledging our parts, and witnessing our pains and stories, we regain the ability to choose our actions consciously.
The Benefits of Deep Inner Work with IFS
Unblending and Self-Awareness: Recognizing and separating from our parts allows us to see our true Self more clearly.
Healing and Integration: Witnessing and acknowledging the stories and pains of our parts helps in healing and integrating them.
Empowerment and Choice: As we reconnect with our Self, we reclaim our power to choose intentionally rather than react impulsively.
Pause and Reflection: We gain the ability to create a sacred pause between impulse and action, allowing us to make conscious choices.
By engaging in deep inner work, we move from a state of being controlled by our parts and behaviors to becoming the driver of our own lives. This shift is transformative, offering hope and empowerment.
Reclaiming Choice
Reclaiming choice involves several key steps:
Self-Recognition: Identify and reconnect with your Self.
Witnessing Parts: Acknowledge and listen to the stories and pains of your parts with compassion and kindness.
Creating a Pause: Develop the ability to pause between impulse and action.
Conscious Decision-Making: Use this pause to make intentional, conscious choices.
Conclusion
Choice is an essential quality of Self-leadership, offering us the power to navigate our lives with intention and authenticity. By engaging in deep inner work we can reclaim our sense of choice, move past addictive behaviors, and become the true leaders of our own lives.
In the next article, I will share a practice to help you explore moments of choice, examining whether you are in the driver's seat or the passenger's seat in your relationship with different aspects of life.
Meanwhile, reflect on the power of choice in your own life.
How can you reclaim your ability to choose consciously and lead your life more from your true Self?
Let me know if this perspective on choice resonated with you.
